Creative Maths Consultancy

My work as a Creative Maths Consultant involves working with artists and theatre makers to embed mathematical ideas - from formulae, to statistics - into creative projects. This includes both:

  • Applying mathematical concepts and forms to non-mathematical ideas, such as my project An Algorithm for Deviance

  • Working to produce statistics and data to support storytelling on topics from the gender pay gap to the environment and the economy. Most recently on the Jane Austen Fan Club.

I’m interested in how mathematical structures - formulae, equations, graphs - can be used as a form of storytelling. There can be both moments of resonance - where the maths allows for the representation of something that would be otherwise hard to express, and moments of friction, where the rigidity of maths cannot hold the messiness of emotion. In 2018, I worked as the Mathematical Collaborator on Haley McGee's The Ex-Boyfriend Yard Sale, where Haley and I collaborated to co-write a maths formula for the cost of love.
